Journal #3 2/6/06

Read the following quote and respond by either analyzing what is being said or reflecting personally through your own experience...

An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of inprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

To me this quote is saying that a person who does something wrong and admits it is wise. But a person who does something bad and doesn't care knows nothing about respect. Respect for themselves and respect for others

i agree with what Mike Matthews stated in his response. you show more respect accepting the consequences given to you rather than being indignant and fighting the set rules.

we as humans know or have been given the right to feel when your doing something bad. if we know we have done something bad then we should pay the consequence.

Just because society finds something to be socially acceptable, doesn't mean that it's right. (perfect example of this is slavery.) If your conscience is telling you it's wrong, then it probably is. Sacrificing your freedom to bring an injustice to the attention of the public sounds suspiciously martyrish, but if it's the only way to accomplish it then I guess it's up to the individual to decide where their priorities lie.

I am the kind of person who will not follow any sort of rule or law that is immoral or unjust. I will question authority to the fullest extent if they are wrong in whatever they are doing. I get punished for doing so, but it is okay because I know that I am right and so do they.

MY UNDERSTANDING WAS THAT IF A PERSON UNDERSTANDS HIS MISTAKES AND REALIZES HIS CONSEQUENCE, WHETER IT IS NEGATIVE OR POSITIVE HE OR SHE WILLBE BECOME A BETTERMAN IN THE LONG RUN(FUTURE).

This quote is awesome. I highly agree with the whole quote in its entirety. Rules are made to be bent, looked past in times of need, and even broken if some are so unjust and outdated.

they're willing to accept the charges knowing what they did was wrong and to accept their punishment.

A PERSON WHO EXCEPTS HIS MISTAKES IS A VERY WISE PERSON IS UP TO HIM TOREGRET HIS ACTIONS, AS LONG AS THE PERSON UNDERSTANDS HIS CONSEQUENCES.
